CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

PRAYER OF THE DAY (ELW p. 150)

Let us pray. A brief silence is kept before the prayer.

Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

NEW MEMBER WELCOME – Norman

Pastor:

We are here this morning to welcome these new members into the community which is Norman Lutheran Church. We are not a building, but the gathered family of God. We are brothers and sisters in Christ, given this new identity through our baptism into Jesus’ death and resurrection. Today we welcome you as members of this family in the larger body of Christ.

And so we ask, do you desire to join the membership of Norman Lutheran Church? If so please answer: “We do.”

I ask the congregation to stand and join in confessing our faith.

Do you believe in God the Father?

All: I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Pastor: Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

All: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Pastor: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen

Pastor:

Having together confessed our faith in the Triune God, we now welcome you into the family of our congregation and into the ministry of the church. As active followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to spread his Good News.

Congregation: We welcome you as brothers and sisters in Christ, and thank God for this unique opportunity to serve God and one another. May the God to whom we belong equip us for every good work that we do together in his name.

Pastor: Let us pray. Heavenly Father, as you called James and John, Simon and Andrew to fish for people, so you have called us to serve you with our own talents and resources. We thank you for bringing to us these new members of Norman Lutheran Church. You have told us that wherever two or more are gathered in your name, there you are with them. Help us, we pray, to see and feel that presence and that others may come to know you through their interactions with us. We thank you for the life journey that brought these new members to join our church today. We celebrate the unique impact they will make here and already have made here, through their presence, gifts, and talents. May this congregation offer support in times of trouble and rejoice with them always. May our church home strengthen their faith and deepen their discipleship. All this we pray in Christ’s Holy Name. All: Amen

CHILDREN’S MOMENT – 3rd Grade Bibles

If our third-grade families would please come forward.

Presider: Today is such an important day for our third graders Luke Olson, Thomas Kuznia, Gunnar Mitchell, Oskar Berg, Cameron Mitchell, Reagan Lindemann, Zayden Mack, and Mack Starcevic as well as their parents as their parents fulfill the promise made in baptism to place the Holy scriptures in their child’s hands. Parents if you would please face your child with their Bible in your hands.

This Bible is a gift from your church family here at Norman Lutheran Church. Luke Olson, Thomas Kuznia, Gunnar Mitchell, Oskar Berg, Cameron Mitchell, Reagan Lindemann, Zayden Mack, and Mack Starcevic receive the gift of this Bible so that the story of God and God’s people may be with you at home, church, or wherever you shall choose to carry it. Enjoy reading how God is at work in the world, in nature and in history. Learn about the life and teachings of Jesus. Be open to how God may continue to speak to you through your reading of the scriptures.

Parents, please place your child’s Bible in their hands, then place your hand on their head and let us pray:

Blessed be your name, O Lord our God, you are the fount and source of every blessing! You have revealed yourself to us your children in many and diverse ways. Our memory of your revelation is in the Scriptures that these children hold in their hands. Look with delight upon these beautiful children today as they receive these Bibles to read and remember You in the stories of our salvation. Help them to absorb its wisdom and live its truth.

Walk with them and encourage them with the help of the Holy Spirit to use these sacred writings for inspiration, for the increase of faith and devotion, and for the building up of your Kingdom. Through your Word may we each be transformed into the very likeness of Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. Amen.

  • Inside your Bibles parents you will find a fun Bible worksheet that you and your child can complete at home to help learn how to navigate the Bible!

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

The prayers are prepared locally for each occasion. The following examples may be adapted or used as appropriate.

Let us turn our hearts to God, our breath and life, as we pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. A brief silence.

Holy God, the church triumphant gathers around your throne to praise you. We join them in worship and remember your sustaining grace in every generation. Heal our divisions; show us unity in your presence. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Holy creator, we marvel at your creation revealed in the cycle of seasons, changing landscapes, and the rise and fall of ocean tides. Turn us from selfish consumption and open us to gentle healing of the earth so all creation thrives. Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

Holy advocate, we lift grateful hearts for the ability to vote and elect leaders. Grant wisdom to those who will be elected and safety to poll workers. May civic leaders serve the whole community, especially all who are underrepresented or oppressed. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Holy healer, bless the brokenhearted and all who mourn. Send your compassion to all who grieve, grant wholeness to those who are sick, and accompany the dying. Be near to all who need you. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Holy comforter, we pray for this congregation, that the promise of your new life may be shared and experienced. We pray for the funeral ministry of this congregation, that families and friends seeking your love find it here. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Holy One, for the saints who now rest in your mercy, we give you thanks. We remember their witness of faithfulness and love. Olive Olsgaard, Jason Schatzke, Karen Brayton, Berniece Braaten, James Linscheid, Mark Tegtmeier, Judy Jermstad, Glen Blanchard, Joe Brown, Gerald Overboe and all those who we name out loud or in our hearts. Praise to you for the eternal life they have been given through Jesus Christ. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

We offer our spoken prayers and those held in our hearts trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Amen.
