Pastor Katie Kringstad

Valentine’s Day Worship

A Service for Valentine’s Day This worship service centers on Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians, that they would be rooted in love. - Ephesians 3:14-21

PRELUDE/BELL

WELCOME/ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Pastor: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

All: And also, with you.

Pastor: God is love and those who live in God’s love, live in God and God lives in them.

GATHERING SONG: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (ELW 631) vs 1-2

PEACE

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

God of Love, We confess we are sometimes impatient, and often unkind.

We are quick to envy and find subtle ways to boast.

There are times we are rude and lift ourselves up as we put others down.

Loving God, teach us to love.

God of Love, We confess that we are quickly angered.

We are quick to record how often we’ve been wronged.

There are times we celebrate the misfortune of others.

Loving God, teach us to love.

God of Love, We confess that we put ourselves first.

We’re reluctant to give, we are slow to sacrifice.

There are times we hesitate to protect.

Loving God, teach us to love.

When we are tempted to judge, to assume the worst…

May love remind us to trust

When we are tempted to despair, to assume all is lost…

May love remind us to hope

When we are tempted to give up, to assume it will never happen…

May love remind us to persevere

All:  Loving God teach us to love. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY based on Ephesians 3:16-19:

Let us pray, We bow our hearts before You, Father God.

You are the Creator of everything we see in heaven and on earth.

We pray that out of your glorious, unlimited resources,

You would strengthen our hearts and minds through the power of Your Holy Spirit.

May your love be the rich soil in which our lives are rooted.

May your love be the firm foundation on which we build,

so that, together with all Your people everywhere,

we would come to truly understand how long, how high,

how wide and how deep Your love really is— how it far surpasses anything we can imagine. God, fill us with the fullness and the power that comes from You alone,

so that our lives would reflect your goodness and grace to the world around us. Amen.

CHILDREN’S MOMENT:

HOLY COMMUNION

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

     hallowed be thy name,

     thy kingdom come,

     thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

     as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

     but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

     forever and ever. Amen.

PSALM: Psalm 145:1-8

1I will exalt you, my God and king,

and bless your name forever and ever.

2Every day will I bless you

and praise your name forever and ever.

3Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised!

There is no end to your greatness.

4One generation shall praise your works | to another

  and shall declare your power.

5I will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty

  and all your marvelous works.

6They shall tell of the might of your wondrous acts,

and I will recount your greatness.

7They shall publish the remembrance of your great goodness;

they shall sing joyfully of your righteousness.

8The Lord is gracious and full of compassion,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

HYMN OF THE DAY: Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service (ELW 712) vs 1-2

READING: Ephesians 3:14-21

SERMON:  Paul Prays for the Ephesians

14 I bow in prayer to the Father because of my work among you. 15 From the Father every family in heaven and on earth gets its name. 16 I pray that he will use his glorious riches to make you strong. May his Holy Spirit give you his power deep down inside you. 17 Then Christ will live in your hearts because you believe in him. And I pray that your love will have deep roots. I pray that it will have a strong foundation. 18 May you have power together with all the Lord’s holy people to understand Christ’s love. May you know how wide and long and high and deep it is. 19 And may you know his love, even though it can’t be known completely. Then you will be filled with everything God has for you.  20 God is able to do far more than we could ever ask for or imagine. He does everything by his power that is working in us. 21 Give him glory in the church and in Christ Jesus. Give him glory through all time and for ever and ever. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY: Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service (ELW712) vs 3-4

APOSTLES’ CREED –

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.*

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

OFFERING SONG: What Feast of Love (ELW 487)

OFFERING PRAYER (ELW p. 152)

Let us pray.

Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness, you have blessed us with these gifts: ourselves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior, and Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION –

On this Valentine’s Day, let us lift our hearts in prayer and seek intercession for our deepest needs. As we celebrate love, let us remember the words of St. Paul from his letter to the Corinthians:

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” This is the love of God.

With these words in mind, let us offer our prayers:

Patience and Listening: Lord, help us be slow to judge others and quick to listen. May we hesitate to criticize and always encourage, remembering Your endless patience with us. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Kindness and Thoughtfulness: May our words be gentle, our actions thoughtful. Let us show courtesy to friends and strangers alike, for those little things often mean so much. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Humility and Appreciation: Help us have humble hearts, always seeking the good in others. May we celebrate and appreciate all that we have, ready to share with those around us. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Gentleness and Forgiveness: When tempted to hold grudges, may we release them and extend a hand of love and friendship. Help us forgive as You forgive us. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Standing for Truth and Goodness: May we defend the defenseless, help the helpless, and make a difference in the lives of others, no matter how small it may seem. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Being a Refuge and Warmth: When the world feels harsh, may our hearts remain open, a place of acceptance and warmth. Let us strive to help those who are sick, lost, lonely, or in despair. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Hope and Perseverance: Each new day is an opportunity to serve. May our hearts always beat with love for You and others, even as we remember those we love but see no longer. Jesus Christ’s eternal light brings hope to us all. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Knowing the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, we offer these prayers and the silent prayers of our hearts in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

SENDING

God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.

BLESSING (ELW p. 155)

Pastor: I ask God to strengthen you by his

 Spirit—not a brute strength but a

glorious inner strength—that Christ

will live in you as you open the door

and invite the Lord in. And I ask

that with both feet rooted firmly in

love, you’ll be able to take in with all

 Christians the extravagant

 dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach

out and experience the width! Test  its length! Investigate the depths! Rise to

the heights! Live full lives, full in

 the fullness of God’s love.

All: Amen!

SENDING SONG:  Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (ELW 631) vs 3-4

DISMISSAL

Go in peace. Serve the Lord.

Thanks be to God.
