GATHERING SONG: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross #803 vs 1-2
SHARING OF THE PEACE PRAYER OF THE DAY: (unison)
Let us pray. A brief silence is kept before the prayer
ALL- Benevolent, merciful God: When we are empty, fill us. When we are weak in faith, strengthen us. When we are cold in love, warm us, that with fervor we may love our neighbors and serve them for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (ELW p. 94). KYRIE – (ELW P.147)
CANTICLE OF PRAISE-
LORD’S PRAYER - Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
HOLY BAPTISM – Maverick Oxner, Parents: Kaitlyn & Jake Oxner, Godparents: Cameron and Erin Holland
APOSTLES’ CREED – (included in the Baptism at Norman)
CHILDREN’S MOMENT-
1st Reading: Genesis 2:8–9, 15–17; 3:1–24
8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Psalm: Psalm 37:1-9 (responsively)
1 LEADER- Do not be provoked by evildoers; do not be jealous of those who do wrong.
2 ALL- For they shall soon wither like the grass, and like the green grass fade away.
3 LEADER- Put your trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and find safe pasture.
4 ALL- Take delight in the Lord, who shall give you your heart’s desire.
5 LEADER- Commit your way to the Lord; put your trust in the Lord, and see what God will do.
6 ALL- The Lord will make your vindication as clear as the light and the justice of your case like the noonday sun.
7 LEADER-- Be still before the Lord and wait patiently. Do not be provoked by the one who prospers, the one who succeeds in evil schemes.
8 ALL- Refrain from anger, leave rage alone; do not be provoked; it leads only to evil.
9 LEADER- For evildoers shall be cut off, but those who hope in the Lord shall possess the land.
HYMN OF THE DAY: Lift High the Cross #660 vs1-2
SERMON: Pastor Katie – Believe – 3 Salvation
READING: Matthew 26:1–4; 27:27–44 Matthew 26:1- 4
1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.” 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus Matthew 27:27-44
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
The Crucifixion of Jesus
32 As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews. 38 Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
HYMN OF THE DAY: Lift High the Cross #660 vs 3-4
